Chapter 32

Planning

Throughout the rest of the day Sean rested up in his tent and ran through the forthcoming penetration repeatedly.

He knew that if he had been back on Earth, he would be carrying out proper rehearsals of each phase, not simply trying to mentally visualise it. He and Mamba would have spent hour after hour perfecting each aspect, no detail would have gone untouched.

Lying back on his sleeping bag he opened his eyes slowly. He was expecting and hoping for the alien virtual reality experience to occur, and now that it was, he blinked a few times to make sure.

I’m getting much better at this.

It made him sit up and cross his legs.

He waited for the image to clear, they always started blurry but after a few seconds cleared up beautifully. He took a few deep breaths and began watching himself perform the infiltration the night before. He watched himself stop in between the two slave pens, then the slaughter of the knight captain … the whole night’s performance played out for him in front of his eyes slowly and clearly.

He used the VR image to plan a different route in this time, keeping in mind this time around it wasn’t a recce … but a kill mission.

His preparation ended as Rowan entered the tent, beads of sweating running down his face.

‘Rowe … can you see anything in front of my face?’ asked Sean.

Sean studied the boy’s face … and saw his confused expression.

‘What do you mean?’

‘Here … can you see anything?’ asked Sean as he waved a circular motion with his hand in front of his face.

‘No … nothing … should I see something?’

Sean blinked a couple of times and the VR image dissolved slowly.

No … never mind, I was just checking something for my own sake. Where’ve you been?’ asked Sean.

‘The king requested I accompany him on a ride around the encampment, he wanted reassurance the men were alert and prepared for anything.’

‘And …?’

‘They appear serious and ready in my view, but I did have a thought whilst riding which I wanted to ask you …?’

Sean smiled.

‘You know the deal champ … ask me anything.’

Rowan sat on the ground in front of him.

‘From what you have said, you have a concern that the Samarians will change their positions, thus forcing you to change your plan tonight.’

Yes … the ideal is they won’t reposition themselves … so when I go in, they’ll be where I expect them to be,’ offered Sean hoping to stimulate the boy further.

‘Well, I was thinking that mayhaps we should attempt to force them into their positions sooner?’ suggested Rowan.

‘Alright … carry on … I think I know where you are going with this,’ helped Sean.

The boy went quiet as he appeared to try and gather his thoughts better.

‘Well … we saw how they lined up for the first battle, the outlanders took up the flanks whilst the Samarians spread out in a long battle line … why do we not try and force them
